OK, alright then - it comes down to this question every so often - and it's no surprise why: "what gives?"
First thing's first, I realise it looks something like this: you WERE doing a heap of this 'Black Satin' stuff and then all of sudden you've stopped and started with this weird 'MulletAirs' thingy. What are you doing?
Truth be told: I don't know myself! And to be honest: that's half the fun of it all! I'm a scatterbrain, a Pisces, a bit of an eccentric fruit-loop and I guess at times (much as I despise to keep using popular internet memes and catchphrases and such) I guess I "saw something shiny over there..." (Heh!)
'Black Satin' is still on the cards and not something I will forget down the track, but I suppose as an arty-type we all have our version of the inevitable 'desk drawer'. You know what I mean here too - the place where all your ideas go to rest for a little while... ferment... stew... and then every so often BAM! Come back out from the darkest abyss of shelvedness to be revealed in a newer light. Also too, 'Black Satin' I had a *general* idea on what I was doing with the characters, the story line and the world itself - the issue I had was the 'tone' of it. I need to still work out where it 'sits' (for me) and then allow it to work that way. My creations and story lines are rarely (if ever) a straight line where A + B = C and therefore it's always the same formula. Eh, no. Sorry, it's just not that simple (wish it was though! That would be great! But it would also be a little stifling I would wager.) So this is where I am now - the much SIMPLER origin of starting something to *hopefully* finish and see it through (remember: Pisces, and yes, that is a legitimate excuse...) which has a very focused story, characters that are quite easy to flesh out and a story line that is within a classic-esque 80's-psuedo universe (anything goes here! Makes it much easier to believe!) so being able to write and create a little more 'freely' within this construct is going to make the whole process much easier for me as a creator.
At the end of the day though, with anything creative - I guess it's all an experiment. Seeing what works and what doesn't. Going from one thing to another. Getting there, stopping, dipping, trying again, falling, failing, crashing, burning, rising, getting back up and reaching a new height and then... dipping again. Up n' down. Much like life in itself really! I think that's why art saves. It just makes sense of this messy cacophony that we call our world (that we as human beings have all but destroyed - c'mon! - let's face it!) so why not poke a little fun at it? Have some fun with your art? Laugh at yourself when you can? Try and get some more every so often (hey! We created a money-oriented world - we're just trying to survive... Y'know what I'm saying...)
So, why the Hell not? Give it a good crack!
Back to it all I suppose. And if this doesn't all work out - well - I'll go back to writing some of my Pulpy-type Crime Novels.
Cheers,
Jake
